On Thursday, the Delhi Government announced a mandatory two-day work-from-home policy for its employees every week as part of a wider effort to reduce fuel consumption and encourage sustainable travel.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the move forms part of a larger push toward energy conservation, with government departments also being asked to cut fuel usage and rely more on public transport. The policy is expected to bring noticeable changes to the way government offices function in the capital, while private companies may also face growing pressure to adopt similar measures.

The decision comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to reduce dependence on petrol and diesel by embracing public transport, carpooling, and remote working wherever possible. Announcing the measures at a press briefing, CM Rekha Gupta said all Delhi government offices would now observe work from home for two days every week. Private companies and institutions have also been advised to follow the same model, though the arrangement for them will remain advisory in nature. The Labour Department has been directed to monitor how the advisory is being implemented.

In addition, the government has reduced monthly petrol and diesel limits for officials by 20 percent and introduced “Metro Monday,” under which ministers and officers will use the Metro once every week. CM also said her official convoy had been significantly reduced and now includes electric vehicles as part of the government’s sustainability campaign.

The Chief Minister said the administration wanted to minimise unnecessary fuel consumption and encourage a culture of public transport use within government functioning. “Only the minimum vehicles needed are being used, and public transport is being used wherever possible,” she said while announcing the measures. The government indicated that the steps are part of a broader attempt to promote cleaner mobility and reduce pressure on conventional fuel consumption across the city.
